We’re delighted to support Ebony Johnson and Ysgol Golwg Pen Y Fan in delivering “Start Strong: A Targeted Breakfast, Skills and Attainment Programme” for 12 disadvantaged learners in Years 3–5. The year-round programme will combine structured breakfast provision with high-quality teaching in literacy, numeracy and oracy, alongside practical activities designed to develop essential life skills.
Pupils will attend three morning sessions each week, focusing on guided reading, comprehension, maths fluency and structured talk activities delivered by skilled staff. A weekly practical session will allow pupils to plan, budget and prepare simple meals, applying their literacy and numeracy skills in meaningful, real-world contexts. Visits to local shops will provide further opportunities to compare prices and develop financial literacy, independence and confidence.
The project reflects Achieve Equity Foundation’s commitment to raising aspirations and improving outcomes for learners affected by poverty. Rather than focusing solely on basic provision, the programme combines high expectations with consistent access to purposeful, high-quality learning. Strengthening reading, numeracy and oracy addresses key barriers to attainment, while the year-round structure provides the continuity needed to support sustained progress.
The programme is underpinned by RADY principles, including ambitious expectations, high-quality teaching, the use of data to identify pupils and monitor impact, and consistent support over time. Progress will be measured through reading and maths assessments, attendance and pupil engagement.
By bringing together academic development and practical life skills, Ysgol Golwg Pen Y Fan aims to help disadvantaged learners improve attainment while developing confidence, independence and aspirations. The project has the potential to provide a model of targeted, equity-focused provision that could be developed and shared more widely across the school.
