Julia Cunningham, Pupil Premium Lead and Year 3 teacher at John Wheeldon Primary Academy in Stafford, applied for funding to start a family cooking club at their school. Her aim is to invite parents and carers to an after school club where they will cook alongside their children and take home a meal to share with their family each week.
There are multiple benefits to this project. The learners and their families will have access to all the necessary equipment to prepare and cook a nutritious meal. They’ll get food education within a structured environment and build their cooking skills and knowledge. As well as this, there are multiple other benefits such as improved budget skills, confidence, self-esteem and the ability to make positive health choices.
The trustee’s loved Julia’s determination to bring the community together through food. They agreed with the value of food education and the multiple layers of benefit to this family club. In fact, they were so impressed they granted slightly more money than Julia asked for.
