Project Update – January 2025
In January 2025, we reached out to The Central Co-operative Learning Trust for an update on their project.  Here’s what project lead, Emma How, had to say …
During November, a group of our disadvantaged pupils had the incredible opportunity to visit RAF Cosford as part of a Trust-wide initiative to inspire interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and promote awareness of related career paths within our local area. Anticipation for the trip was palpable, with students eagerly sharing their excitement in the days leading up to it.

Upon arrival, the children were awestruck by the venue, bursting into applause, oohs and aahs as they entered and were greeted by the sight of historic aircraft on display. Throughout the day, they engaged in a series of hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and creativity. From launching rockets and designing asteroids to building Mars rovers, these immersive tasks not only kindled a passion for STEM but also exemplified our Trust’s commitment to fostering a love of learning and contributing positively to society.”

What is the project?

Emma How, the Trust Improvement Lead for Vulnerable Groups at Central Co-operative Learning Trust in Staffordshire submitted a bid for part funding towards an ambitious STEM project that starts with a STEM day at RAF Cosford.  During the day 240 learners from across all nine schools in the Trust will participate in three different science, engineering and maths workshops.  There will then be follow up back in schools with STEM clubs in each club, and part of the funding application covers equipment for these clubs.

How will learners benefit?

Learners will be covering several aspects of the National Curriculum in a way that relates to the real world of work.  It will show young people the range of career opportunities in STEM subjects and allow them to experience a taste of this in the real world.  The learners will also benefit from team building during the workshops and clubs back in school which in turn will impact on self-esteem and confidence.

Why was it funded?

The ambitious nature of the bid, involving so many learners across 9 schools stood out to the trustees and they appreciated the ties with the real world of work.  They were very impressed by the plans to make sure that this was not just a ‘fun day out’ but linked back to a club that would run in each school.
